What is lanyard used for?

A strap is a cord,  webbing, or strap that can provide a variety of functions such as attachment, restraint, removal, activation and deactivation. Straps are also the outfitting used to secure or lower items on board. In the French army, straps were used to attach pistols, swords, or whistles (for signals) to uniforms semi-permanently. The strap design was used by land cavalry  and naval officers at sea.
